Autism

More than 1% of the Dutch population, about 200,000 people, are autistic. Autism is very different for everyone and there is not one way to define it. 

What is autism?

Characteristics

  • Having difficulty interacting with others, 

  • Often taking information literally and having difficulty understanding indirect/non-verbal communication.

  • Have difficulty imagining future situations, have difficulty planning and organizing.

  • Autistic people can focus on a single detail and have a noticeable list of interests and activities.

  • Good ability to perceive detail and excellent concentration on a single task.

Possible services

​Saxion offers a few facilities to help 

  • You can spread your study activities or internship

  • For exams: extension of exam time and a quiet room

  • You have priority to use the library concentration room

  • In case of study delay: financial support via Saxion. 

Tips

  • Use a clock or stopwatch.

  • Study actively (underline, summarize, read aloud).

  • Provide clear expectations and options.

  • Use a digital calendar.

  • Try to get a regular partner for labs and work groups.

  • Record lectures.

  • Use earplugs when taking exams.

  • Respect your limits.

Buddy project

If you're autistic, Saxion offers help in the form of a study buddy. They will guide you during the first academic year and support you with problems you (may) encounter at Saxion. 

 

If you think that a study buddy could mean something to you, you can talk about this to the student counselor.
